IYRU (now ISAF) held trials for a two- person performance dinghy. This saw powerful boats such as the Osprey and Hornet competing with the 1. Jollyboat, and brought the Flying Dutchman and the Coronet (forerunner of the 5. The FD was then chosen as the twoman dinghy for the 1. Olympics, in Naples Bay, and was soon recognised as an ideal Olympic boat. It was difficult to sail well, demanding physically and technically and had an elitist air. Keith Musto and Tony Morgan won silver at Tokyo in 1. UK would go one better four years later in Acapulco – the Hamble team of John Oakley and David Hunt were national, European and world champions. But victory was not theirs – further along the south coast was another sailor who would to dominate the class and Olympic sailing for the next decade. Rodney Pattisson claimed his first major sailing victory racing a Firefly at the Schools Championships. Even at this young age it was clear he had extraordinary talent and single- minded determination. On leaving school, he joined the Navy and was sent to the Britannia Naval College at Dartmouth, where he took possession of his first FD, built by Roy Rigden, who had won the nationals a few years earlier. Pushing boundaries. The FD was a technical boat, with constant pressure on crews to innovate, so Rodney soon changed his Rigden for a Dutch built Shooneveldt hull. No detail was too small or insignificant for Rodney and he put in long hours afloat, working tirelessly to perfect mast, sail and rig combinations, as well as many hours of boat handling practice. He also searched for a crew matching his exacting height and weight requirements, teaming up with an ex- competitor from school days, Iain Mac. Donald- Smith. At the same time he ordered a new boat from Bob Hoare in Poole, and the . It’s likely the boat received this treatment – Rodney was normally paranoid about weight yet . With a dark blue hull and name in a rolling wave down the side, . In 1. 96. 8 he had one other advantage – the fleet was fairly small and his main competitor, John Oakley, was a consummate big fleet sailor from the Merlin Rocket fleet. With fewer boats around, John’s big fleet experience was negated and the Pattisson/Mac. Donald- Smith combination was selected. Pattisson and Mac. Donald- Smith arrived in Acapulco two months before the Games for intensive acclimatisation and tuning. However their first race was a disaster – the race officer did not have time to get organised, so the start line was heavily biased and ridiculously short. Pattisson still finished first, but the Canadian protest was heard before his, found in their favour and disqualified the UK boat. Pattisson was not allowed to proceed with his own protest as he was now scored DSQ. Despite this setback, in subsequent races Rodney disappeared ahead of the fleet, pointing higher and sailing faster to win the next five races. With only one discard, he stayed out of further trouble, taking second place in the final race to win the gold medal. A winning streak. All photos: Eileen Ramsay / PPLPattisson and Mac. Donald- Smith went on to win successive national, European and world titles, before focusing on the 1. Olympics, sailed at Kiel. Iain’s attention turned towards other forms of sailing, so Rodney got Chris Davies to crew his next new Hoare boat. The partnership enjoyed early success at the Europeans, but the selection trials were more difficult. Keith Musto, 1. 96. Rodney’s meticulous preparations let him down. Expecting light airs, he measured a stiff, powerful mast, but the weather changed and he struggled for speed. After loosing another race to Musto, he capsized on the way back to the shore. What happened next is unclear, but when the boat righted, the spreader root was torn from the mast, a failure deemed impossible to repair. With a new spar Rodney ground his way through the opposition to win the trials by a small margin. The Games were overshadowed by the terrorist outrage in the Olympic Village, but Rodney again showed his ability to focus and retained his crown after just six of the seven races. He then showed another side of his personality, leading the campaign for medals to be awarded to crews – at this time only the helm was given full recognition. Master of psychology. By 1. 97. 5, a new . They won the Europeans in 1. FD sailing had been on the wane in the UK, other nations had made huge advances. In the search for speed, rumours circulated Rodney had not just one new boat but that others, identically painted and fitted out, had been seen. Only Bob Hoare and Rodney would know which was which, along with any differences in shape and construction. This subterfuge was taken to the point that, when one boat suffered minor damage, the same repair appeared on the . At one event, a German team noted his early morning boat testing before many people were about. They formed a plan to sail just after sunrise, so as to be afl oat when Rodney came down to sail. Somehow, Rodney heard of this and was just returning from a practice session when the Germans arrived in the dinghy park at dawn. At Montreal in 1. Rodney and Julian appeared to be working their magic, with first and second places in the first two races. But then they slipped into the pack, while the German Diesch brothers powered to gold. In the end, it was just the first race win that kept Rodney and Julian in silver, narrowly ahead of the Brazilian boat that took bronze. In 1. 98. 0 Rodney again hoped for an Olympic place, but at the trials, Patrick Blake and Christian Houchin won selection with a day to spare. Money no object. For his final FD, for the 1. Rodney built a super high tech boat that became known as the most expensive dinghy ever. The exotic construction, with an aluminium honeycomb core between Kevlar sheets, resulted in a light yet incredibly stiff and strong hull. It’s a measure of how well the boat was built that even with the rig loadings used in FDs, K3. However, Rodney’s innovations could not match those of Jo Richards, who had his own hi- tech FD and the benefit of years of Jim Saltonstall’s training. Jo, crewed by Pete Allam, beat Rodney at the trials. In the big picture of top flight dinghy sailing, Rodney’s achievements put him right at the top of the podium with Paul Elvstr. It wasn’t until 2. Finn gold at Qingdao, that Ben surpassed Rodney’s medal tally. In reaching his total of three medals and 1. Rodney used at least nine boats. All were innovative, beautifully prepared – Rodney didn’t.
